The first true map of Phobos, by Thomas Duxbury (Jet Propulsion Laboratory), depicted the major features seen by Mariner 9. The simple rectangular projection distorts the craters located at high northern and southern latitudes. Duxbury notes that on maps of Phobos the name Roche has been associated with several different craters.

The higher-resolution images from the twin Viking orbiters allowed Peter Thomas (Cornell University) to better Duxbury’s map of Phobos. This map shows the array of grooves that appear to radiate from the large crater Stickney.
