Sources: The research that led to this catalog was supported by Fulbright Hungary Grant No. 1222202, awarded to H. Hargitai for research at USGS Astrogeology, Flagstaff, Arizona (advisor: Trent Hare), and by the ICA Commission on Planetary Cartography (advisor: Kira Shingareva). Most of the data is based on the inventory of the map library of USGS Astrogeology.

Карта составлена Московским ордена Ленина институтом инженеров геодезии, аэросъёмки и картографии. При создании карты основным картографическим материалом являлась бланковая карта Марса масштаба 1:20 000 000 (СССР, 1976 г.). В качестве дополнительного материала использовались карта Марса масштаба 1:5 000 000, подготовленная Геологической службой США (США, 1978 г.), и карта Марса масштаба 1:23 500 000, составленная Ч. Кроссом (Англия, 1973 г.).
Географическая структура Марса аппроксимируется сферой радиуса R₀ = 3393,4 км.
Номенклатура марсианских образований соответствует решениям XIX, XX, XXI и XXII Генеральных Ассамблей МАС (Прага 1967 г., Сидней 1973 г., Гренобль 1976 г., Монреаль 1979 г.). Русская транскрипция соответствует спискам, утверждённым Комиссией АН СССР по космической топонимике.

The map was compiled by the Moscow Order of Lenin Institute of Engineers of Geodesy, Aerial Surveying, and Cartography.
In creating the map, the primary cartographic material was a blank map of Mars at a scale of 1:20,000,000 (USSR, 1976). As additional material, a Mars map at a scale of 1:5,000,000 prepared by the United States Geological Survey (USA, 1978), and a Mars map at a scale of 1:23,500,000 compiled by Ch. Cross (England, 1973) were used.
The geographic structure of Mars is approximated by a sphere with a radius R₀ = 3393.4 km.
The nomenclature of Martian features corresponds to the resolutions of the XIX, XX, XXI, and XXII General Assemblies of the International Astronomical Union (Prague 1967, Sydney 1973, Grenoble 1976, Montreal 1979). The Russian transcription follows the lists approved by the USSR Academy of Sciences Commission on Space Toponymy.
The map was compiled by institute staff under the scientific supervision of Honored Worker of Science and Technology, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor V.D. Bolshak.
